What is an Epigram

An epigram is a pointed or antithetical saying that conveys a notable or striking thought very briefly.

An example of an epigram would be "Well begun is half done." We know that we are not at the half-way mark when we have just started but as we think about it we realize that we are being told of the importance of a good beginning in helping any project to be completed quickly and efficiently.

An epigrammatical phrase is one that has the qualities of an epigram. An epigrammatist is someone who coins an epigram.

Correct spelling capitol or capital

3,001 Business & Sales Letter Software

Which spelling is correct? "capital or "capitol"?

The word "capital" is derived from the Latin "caput" which meant a head. From this we can see why we have a capital letter at the start or "head" of a sentence. The word was also applied to the head city of a country where its administrative center was usually located. Our body's head is the administrative centers of our bodies which makes it an apt metaphor. In the United States of America the main legislative building is known as the "Capitol" and it stands on Capitol Hill.

Although you will often find people using them interchangeably, it is probably better to use "capital" in general usage and leave "capitol" for buildings.

American Slang

American slang can seem strange or even funny to other groups of people who speak English as their native language, and even more so to foreigners learning it as a second language.

Slang is defined as informal words or expressions that are not standard in a dialect or language. These words are often rude or taboo and tend to develop in groups who use them as an "in" language. Some become popular and spread out into the mainstream and can, over time, gain acceptance as genuine, standard, new words.

Many of the words that British people regard as American slang are in fact old British words that have fallen into disuse in their native country but were in use in America when it was a British colony in the 16th century. The US is a land of immigrants and each group has contributed their slang words, and modified standard English to suit their native pronunciation.

If you are looking for a book on American slang "The Slangman Guide to STREET SPEAK 1" comes highly recommended by people sitting ESL exams. For example, instead of "We are going to have a blast at the party," the rewritten dialog shows "W'r gonna have a blast 'it the pardy!"

It teaches you the words and how to use them. You learn correct grammar, accent and most importantly the context where you are likely to hear it. Your understanding of American culture and daily conversations, especially if you are in the 15-20 age range, will greatly improve with this book and its comical pictures. Listening to radio or watching TV becomes more interesting for learners.

Slang is not the same as jargon. This term applies to the specialized words of an industry or profession and usually involves technical terms. In science for example it is necessary to use very precise terms, and so the common meaning of a word and its usage in a particular science can be different.

English grammar test

Preparing for an English grammar test requires careful study as there are idiosyncrasies in the language that can catch you out. For example, it might be said of a person that "he wolfs his supper like a pack of wolves". Try writing that with the same spelling for "wolfs" as "wolves" and you will fail yours English Grammar test!

English grammar rules such as "i" before "e" except after c are useful but be wary of exceptions. It means where "i" and "e" appear together, the order is ie, except immediately after "c", when it is "ei".

Examples: "siege, fiend, chief" or "perceive, conceive, ceiling"

Regular reading will make you aware of the pitfalls as you come across the variations and exceptions. It pays to make a habit of noting the unusual if you wish to learn English grammar to a high, professional standard.

Common exceptions:
Where ie follows c: species, science, sufficient, ancient.
Where ei is not preceded by c: seize, weird, weight, sovereignty, foreign, vein, feisty, kaleidoscope and neighbor

The British government has recommended primary school teachers stop teaching this rule as it causes confusion in young minds.

If all this seems like too much hassle the modern way to improve your English is to use intelligent software that has a large bag of tricks to turn mediocre prose into quality writing. Why not try it now?

British American English spelling mistakes

British or American English spelling mistakes might not really be errors as spelling in the USA has changed from the original English. Some Americans thought that British English needed to be simplified and updated; so they changed some words and this has become accepted as American English.

Unfortunately, this can lead to misunderstandings. If the British had followed the American example it would have been OK but that wasn't really likely to happen as the British have a pride in their language and literature.

The important thing to keep in mind is who your target audience is and consider using a spell checker to get it right as the recipient might not be aware of the alternative spelling.

Some of the most common differences are:
(UK) -- (US)
aluminium, aluminum
analyse -- analyze
anaesthesia -- anesthesia
centre -- center
defence -- defense
dialogue -- dialogue, dialog
fulfil -- fulfill, fulfil
labour -- labor
organise, organize -- organize
programme, program
travelling -- traveling, travelling
tyre, -- tire

So, the next time you see what looks like a typo or bad spelling, remember, it might be a Brit, or if you are one, it could be your American cousin "improving your language".

English Grammer Test

An English grammer test approaching? A nervous tingle down the spine as the thought of bad grammer mistakes leaves you looking silly? It is so easy to make mistakes in an English grammer test and have to suffer the embarrassment.

Getting out the English grammer books and learning English grammer is a tedious business that gets most folks down. However, modern software can greatly enhance your written work, and you learn as you use it.

In Victorian times learning English grammer was seen as a discipline and a way of improving your soul. The harder it was the better for you they thought. Today we have no time for all that as we need to learn fast.

Grammer need no longer be grim, with text-enrichment software you can rapidly improve your sentences to "boss impressing" levels. Imagine you are asked to show a command of English grammer in a pdf report. Can you be confident of pulling it off without embarrassing errors?

Did you notice that I have spelled "grammer" incorrectly throughout this post. It is of course "grammar". Can you imagine how ashamed I would have felt if this error was for real?

English made Easy
A software exists that uses artificial intelligence to scan documents and make suggestions for clearer more fluent "text enriched" English. It parses emails, letters, legal documents, etc. against a vast database of "common usage" expressions and greatly improves your written communications.

Letter, email, and document writers around the globe are discovering this software makes English text more fluent and enables you to avoid embarrassing mistakes. Do you or your employees write "must of" instead of "must've"?

The wrong expression alters meanings and could potentially invalidate a contract. The harm to business relationships would be immense.

British and American versions are being used by a growing mass of people to improve confidence in their writing and make a good first impression. Heck, some cool dudes are even using it as a dating aid!

The Native American system of smoke signals inspired its name: "WhiteSmoke".

English grammer books are traditionally very boring, and let's face it -- made from dead trees. Apart from spoiling the planet, and causing worldwide flooding, they are cumbersome to use and often written for a geek to understand; so, English grammer books could easily be consigned to the dustbin of history.

How is that? Well, my friend, there is plenty of grammer help available on the PC page. Apart from the standard word-processor grammer checker that is, to be honest, not terribly good, there are new software programs available that make extraordinary leaps in your writing competence.

You can download English grammer programs that will revolutionize the way you write, and what is more important, how others see the way you write.

Have you ever seen English grammer in a pdf or other document that made you laugh at the schoolboyish howlers? Well, we are all human and get a bit of a giggle at other folks' mistakes but what about your own English grammer in pdf reports? Do you always get it correct?

Hurry leads to mistakes so it makes sense to have a system in place to check and improve important communications. Online English grammer seems to be more casual to a lot of people but your readers will notice errors and might form the opinion that you are a sloppy worker, and that could cost you dear in the long run.

Did you get a giggle from noticing I had spelled "grammer" incorrectly throughout. We all know it should be "grammar". How many mistakes have you left uncorrected? Don't give competitors a free laugh at your expense when you can do something about it.
